Buddy Benches installed at school for Eagle Scout project

Buddy Bench.

Doty & Sons manufactures concrete benches with recycled plastic lumber.  Item B4151 is 5 foot long, 2 concrete legs, recycled plastic lumber back and seat with stainless steel hardware.  The benches are great for recognizing individuals or groups, remembering loved ones (memorial benches) or class gifts. Recently a Boy Scout, Colin Good,  came to us about his Eagle project.  We worked with him so he could purchase three Buddy Benches for a local school. Colin organized the project which include installing concrete block and the benches.  An article about the project recently ran in the local newspaper.

This article appeared in The DeKalb Daily Chronicle is copied here.

Collin Good, a Boy Scout from Troop 2810 chartered out of Sycamore Lutheran Church, recently completed his Eagle project. He installed three Buddy Benches at his former school, Southeast Elementary in Sycamore.

The idea of the Buddy Benches began in Pennsylvania in 2013 when a first-grader thought it would be a great concept and sold his school and community on it. Since then, many other schools across the U.S. have adopted the idea. The benches create a kinder playground culture by having a place for kids to sit if they don’t know what to do on the playground, are new to the school, or are just afraid to ask to join a game or group of kids. When other students see a child sitting on the bench, they should invite the child to join their group or sit down and get to know the child. It combats bullying and playground loneliness, and promotes awareness of the needs of others.

Good began his project by presenting the idea to Southeast Principal Mark Ekstrom, who was excited about the concept and asked for three benches, one for each playground. At Ekstrom’s request, Good helped co-chair the school’s fall pie fundraiser, which is used each year for playground improvement. His responsibilities included creating a flier about the benches to hand out with the pie order forms, counting pie orders, unloading the delivery truck and sorting customer orders, delivering pies and thanking each customer personally for helping support his project.

The next phase of the project took place in the spring. Good and Ekstrom finalized their choices and ordered the benches from Doty and Sons. The Doty family has strong ties with Southeast School and provided a generous discount on the benches. The three back slats on each bench are engraved with the words “Southeast School,” “Buddy Bench,” and “Do a Good Turn Daily,” which both explains the purpose of the benches and is the motto of scouting. A few weeks later, Good organized volunteers to prepare the ground for each bench to be installed. This involved digging, adding sand and leveling and placing the concrete pavers for the benches to sit on. The benches were then assembled and bolted down.

The final piece of the project was to provide the students with education about the benches. Good and several other scouts shared a PowerPoint presentation and acted out several skits to demonstrate how to use the benches.

Custom Concrete Bench Seating

Custom Benches

At Doty & Sons Concrete Products, Inc. we manufacture both standard and custom products.  Recently we were awarded a contract from W.E. O’Neil Construction to manufacture custom bench/seating for a project in Chicago, IL. The design called for concrete seats with custom steel support frames. The project design consisted of 20 feet of straight seating in one section. Another section was 12 feet of seating, transitioning into 23 feet of curved seating.  The curved seat matched the arc of the existing wall.

The concrete seats were cast using a custom concrete mix.  The seats were polished and than sealed for a semi-gloss concrete sealer.  The steel brackets were custom fit so that the seat would be level in relation to the changing grade below.  On site field measuring was required to assure a proper fit.  The steel brackets were hot dipped galvanized for long term corrosion resistance.

Call or email if you bidding a custom project.  We can manufacture products based on drawings provided or on conceptual plans.  Products can be made using standard and custom concrete mixes.  We also offer a complete line of products on our web site.

Outdoor ping pong tables for Apartment Communities

What is one of the best ways to upgrade the amenities at your apartment community? Why not add a Doty & Sons concrete outdoor ping pong/ tennis table to your outdoor recreation area? This table, Item T1086035, has a concrete top with a heavy-duty steel frame. The table makes a simple, but attractive addition to the outdoor community area of any residential complex. We have had a lot of interest in these tables from apartment developers and managers who want to attract residents by adding top-notch recreational amenities.

In April 2017, we sent 2 outdoor ping pong tables to the NRP Group who develop and manage upscale apartment complexes across the United States. We shipped tables to The Upton at Longhorn Quarry and The Kennedy at Brooks City Base, both located in San Antonio, TX.

Stainless steel net. Standard on both models of outdoor ping pong tables.

Last fall we wanted to demonstrate the strength of our concrete ping pong table.  We’ve designed our table with one of the strongest nets on the market today.  This posed a problem.  How do we inform other’s about the strength besides just saying “it’s strong”?  So….we decided to drive a Jeep Cherokee over the table.  We placed two tables side by side and built ramps on each side. We drove the Jeep over the table several times each time stopping with either the front or back tire on top of the net. We video taped this and posted the video on You Tube. This is the link to the video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARSRSlU89ck

Now this is not a professionally edited video, but it shows how strong the net is.

So what did we prove?  Our customers want products that will withstand everyday use, the outdoor elements and sometimes abuse (vandalism).  Our goal is to provide such a product.  We think we did.

Custom Concrete Stone Shaped benches

At Doty & Sons we manufacture a complete line of concrete benches and other site furniture. We work with architects and designers on custom products.  Sometimes we are asked to create odd shaped products. Products that are a little out of the norm. Last year we were asked by a landscape architect if we could make benches that looked like smooth stones.  Something you find on a beach, but much larger.  The benches were for an outdoor classroom project at an elementary school. We were asked to create three stones of different shapes and sizes. The challenge was, what type of form would be used to make the shapes.  We decided that a combination rubber and fiberglass forms would create the smooth, irregular surface without form lines. The “stone” benches are shown here.  The large stone (shown in back) is 52″ x 24″ X 10″, weighs 932 lbs. and cast in Kahlua color.  The medium stone (front) is 41″ X 14″ X 9″, weighs 305 lbs and cast in Mesa buff color.  The small stone (center) is 18″ x 19″ x 13″, weighs 352 lbs and cast in French gray color.  All the stones were sealed with a semi-gloss water based sealer.

Custom Concrete Benches, Fit Pit Seating, Concrete Bar/Grill at Logan Square L Apartments

Want to hang out with your neighbors in an old CTA train car? Want to cookout and share a craft beer or wine with friends at the concrete bar just up the steps from your apartment? Feel like telling stories around the fire on the second floor deck? Residents at the Logan Square L luxury apartments in Chicago (http://logansquarel.com) can do all of the above after the completion of a project that Doty & Sons was proud to be a part of.

In March, we were contacted by a project manager from ARCO/Murray National Construction (http://www.arcomurray.com) about designing and manufacturing custom products for an ambitious project. If we decided to accept this job, we would need to create custom forms for a bar/grilling area, a fire pit seating area, and multiple benches, including one 33 feet in length. Jobs of this scope typically require 10-12 weeks or more to plan and execute. These products were needed in 6 weeks.

When we received the official purchase order on March 22, Tom Doty and Matt Rotramel created a production schedule, started drawing the components in CAD, and ordered all of the necessary materials. By April 8, we shipped the first load of concrete benches. These benches were cast in sections then placed end to end, creating a continuous 33-foot-long bench.

Each section required anchoring angles and custom pipe fittings for water feature jets.

The fire-pit seating area required four forms: one straight section, one 90 degree corner section, one angled section, and one “pointed end” section. An electrical component was necessary for the LED lighting that would be installed later.

Fit Pit Seating

The bar/grilling area included base pieces and the top sections. The shape created several challenges, requiring detailed CAD drawings of each piece. Some of the base pieces required electrical conduit for outlets. The top pieces included special sections for sinks, grills, and coolers. We were a bit concerned about the concrete countertops getting stained. Unless concrete is sealed properly, wine and acidic materials can easily stain the surface. We decided to seal the surface with a highly-recommended sealer manufactured by Versatile Building Products, PolyTop 50/50.

All of the pieces for this project were cast in Doty & Sons C2 finish, a light sandblast finish, limestone in color, that we seal with a non-gloss sealer.

Concrete tables for employee break area patio.

In July 2016, we shipped tables and cigarette disposal containers to Gestamp’s production plant in Union, South Carolina. The tables, Item T7400, are being used for an outdoor break area for the company’s employees. The T7400 is the “Morrison Style” table set.  The tables feature a polished table top with stainless steel umbrella coupler and holder for umbrellas.  The “Morrison Style” is a tradition style that features indented side panels, dentiles and molded bottom edge.  Gestamp chose the C2 finish, which is a limestone color light sandblast finish.  The accompanying photographs display how well the products fit the space. “We are very pleased with our purchase,” remarked Henry Watkins of Gestamp.

Concrete Table Sets for outdoor patio at Aircraft Propeller Services

Earlier this summer Aircraft Propeller Service (APS) located in Lake Zurich, IL.  purchased tables from Doty & Sons.  They were looking for tables that would fit nicely on their newly build patio area.  APS selected 2 styles.  One style is Item T6710 which is a square table with 4 benches.  APS selected a granite aggregate with pigmented concrete SB8 and EX8 finish.  The seats are a grey recycled plastic lumber.  The second table is a modern design  T7500 table set we call the “Venez” table.  This sleek design is different than most table sets.  The tables, although totally different in design and look, go well on the patio.  APS later added umbrellas to the tables.  A special color was selected from a large choice offered by our supplier Treasure Gardens.
